An explosion at the Achimota sub-station of the Electricity Company of Ghana has left most parts of Accra and its environs without power.
The explosion occurred around 7:30pm on Wednesday leaving major parts of the capital in darkness. The outage has also stretched to Tema and parts of the Akuapim range.
Head of the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana Grid Company (Gridco), Albert Quainoo confirmed the reports of an explosion to Citi News news stating that: “Unfortunately the problem we have is coming from our part of the sub-station. We had a problem with one of the lines feeding into the sub-station. It got isolated from the tower and the resultant effect was flashes on the line”. He added that “the power loss could be about 300 Megawatts.”
While it is unknown how this incident occurred or when its going to be resolved, Quainoo moved to assure residents that Gridco were “working to isolate the faulted line to restore power to consumers.”
