Councillors across Ogun State's 20 Local Government Areas have been admonished to avoid confrontation with their respective Chairmen. Rather, they must work harmoniously with them in order to achieve the set goals meant to engender socio-economic development and provide dividends of democracy to the people at the grassroots.
The Governor - Senator Ibikunle Amosun gave this charge in Abeokuta at a one-day workshop organised by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to re-orientate the Councillors on their constitutional roles.
Describing the Local Government as the tier that was closest to the people, Amosun explained that it was important for both the executive and the legislative to understand their respective roles and work hand in hand for the benefit of their people who elected them into office. “We should be able to appreciate and understand what the law says about our roles, both executive and legislature. Local Government is the most important aspect of government and also in political settings because; they form the grassroots and are acquainted with their people more than anybody.”
Amosun charged them to make good use of the opportunity provided by the workshop to sharpen their skills and knowledge on their roles and interactions with career officers and political functionaries in their various council areas.
Earlier in his welcome address, the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Rt. Hon. Muyiwa Oladipo said the workshop was put together to build the capacity of the councillors on their relationships with other stakeholders in order to enhance living standards at the grassroots and make governance at the third tier level satisfying.“This workshop organised by the ministry was aimed at ensuring that the chairmen, councillors and other key personnel in the local government were properly groomed to put up an apt channel of good governance that would stand the test of time,” Oladipo said.
