The Lagos edition is the first African city edition of the game. Since the Lagos release in December 2012, this customised city edition has gained an instant cult following, with not only Lagosians, but Monopoly enthusiasts from across the globe investing in a piece of pride and history.
Generations of Nigerians grew up playing the London version of the iconic board game and were familiar with famous locations of Mayfair, Park lane and Old Kent Road, long before they visited England. The images of Mr. Monopoly, ‘Advance to Go’ and the 'Free Parking’ are etched permanently in the hearts and minds of many Africans across the world. Several memorable family moments have been defined by playing Monopoly. It is such moments that this special edition aims to revive. The CEO of Bestman Games, Mrs. Nimi Akinkugbe said “The game reinforces the importance of family values by creating a reason for family members to enjoy quality time together playing, learning, and having good old-fashioned fun.”
The City of Lagos Edition of Monopoly provides players with an exceptional tour of Lagos. It features historical monuments and landmarks, famous streets, popular neighborhoods, key buildings and leading brands presenting the mega city of Lagos to the world in a fun and interactive way.
The Nigerian Stock Exchange, Murtala Mohammed International Airport, G.R.A Ikeja, Makoko, and Agege are some of the prominently featured travel sites and squares that made it onto the board. The tussle for the 'Mayfair' spot was a hot topic. The most coveted real estate in the familiar London edition was replaced with Banana Island on the Lagos edition.
The City of Lagos Edition of Monopoly has the full support of the Lagos State Government and leading Nigerian institutions including First Bank of Nigeria Plc and Guaranty Trust Bank, who have embraced the invaluable virtues of this special edition. Embedded in the opportunity and chance cards are strong social messages that seek to educate the public about some of the traffic and environmental laws of the city, promote personal financial literacy and tourism, allowing all those who love Lagos to have a piece of her in their homes and get a sense of the unique aspects of life in the vibrant city.
For a game synonymous with the famous London edition and its famous streets and travel squares, it is only fitting that the first African city edition receives a formal UK unveiling in London. The official presentation will take place at The Hilton, Park Lane this weekend.
MONOPOLY first hit shop shelves in the US in 1935. It is now played in 111 countries and enjoyed in 43 different languages.
