Clapham Road Kennington sewage leak
By 'Femi Okutubo
Contrary to earlier fears and reports, the pipe burst on Clapham Road in Kennington, South London is 'clean water' rather than sewage.
There had been reports that a sewage pipe had burst around 8.30pm last night resulting in sewage on the streets and in basement property in the area. A policeman at the scene described it as "stinky sewage."
However, a spokesperson for Thames Water confirmed that it was a burst water main, and the sewage-like colour was because the water had mixed with silt and mud.
A statement released by Thames Water a few minutes ago said:
"We're sorry to customers in the vicinity of Clapham Road, SW9 who may have low water pressure or may be without water.
"This is due to a burst clean water main on Clapham Road.
"Our teams are at the scene and we'll get the water back on as quickly as possible. Whilst repairs are being carried out road traffic management will be in place and the following diversions are in place:
"South bound traffic will be diverted from the Oval (at Clapham Road, A3) to Brixton Road (A23).
"North bound traffic from Stockwell will be diverted to Caldwell Street onto Brixton Road (A23).
"Some bus routes in the area may be diverted whilst vehicle access is restricted, for more information on these, please check Transport For London's website www.tfl.gov.uk .
"We're sorry for any inconvenience this will cause."
