Lambeth Council's Chairman of Health and Adult Services Scrutiny Committee and Labour Councillor for Thornton - Councillor Edward Davie; Senator Femi Ojodu; Senator Oluremi Tinubu; and Lambeth's Acting Mayor - Councillor Adedamola Aminu
Ahead of receiving an Award from the Association of Nigerian Academics in the UK (ANAUK) this weekend, the Senator representing Lagos Central and former "First Lady" of Nigeria's Lagos State - Senator Oluremi Tinubu OON; paid a courtesy call on the Acting Mayor of the London Borough of Lambeth - Councillor Adedamola Aminu.
As part of the visit to Lambeth, Tinubu and her entourage were taken on a tour of the Council which included a visit to the Council Chambers and the Assembly Hall. Councillor Florence Nosegbe - Lambeth's Deputy Cabinet Member for Housing spoke about Council Chambers' proceedings.
Tinubu's visit to Lambeth had as part of the entourage her Distinguished Senator colleagues from Nigeria's leading opposition Political Party - All Progressives Congress (APC): Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, and Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi who was represented by his wife. Also in attendance were some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly including Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King and Hon. M.A. Egberongbe.
Tinubu is being honoured by ANAUK "in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Education and Empowerment in Nigeria."
According to an earlier release signed jointly by Aminu and Gbemiga Adeniji - the association's President and Public Relations Officer (PRO) respectively: "This recognition is to appreciate her commitment to development of education in Nigeria and her poverty alleviation/empowerment initiatives. Her apprenticeship and vocational training for women and youth is of tremendous significance. Her alternative education initiative is targeted towards disadvantaged female. The initiative has given a second chance to many by providing an alternative to formal education to the female child who has lost out on education either through poverty, cultural/religious attitude to the girls, rape, abuse, forced marriage etc."
The Release added that: "Her New Era Foundation established the New Era Camp in Ajah, Lagos. The Foundation provides opportunities to acquire inter-personal skills essential for life accomplishment. Equally note-worthy is her sustainable projects and support to small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs). Furthermore, through collaboration with other government departments and NGOs, she has promoted excellence in leadership and mentorship."
Senator Tinubu holds a National Certificate in Education in Botany and Zoology from the Adeyemi College of Education and a Bachelor's degree in Education from the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in Nigeria.
