The Investiture of London's Lambeth Councillor - Adedamola Aminu, as Mayor of the borough took place on Wednesday in the Council Chambers.
Nigerian-born Councillor Aminu was the Deputy Mayor of the borough and former Deputy Cabinet Member for Children and Young People.
Working alongside Aminu, will be another Nigerian-born Councillor - Donatus Anyawu who is the Deputy Mayor. He is billed to be the Mayor next year following the tradition where the elected Deputy Mayor automatically becomes Mayor in the subsequent civic year.
Councillor Aminu paid tribute to his predecessor Councillor Mark Bennett who died from a suspected heart attack earlier this year. He promised to serve diligently with his colleagues to make Lambeth Council better.
Aminu's nominated Charity is the Girl Child Network - whom he will be raising funds for during his mayoral year.
His academic ascension in the UK began in 1986, graduating from South Thames College, Southwark College, London South Bank University and Greenwich University, on the way gaining ONDs HNCs, Degrees and Masters in Computer Science, Business & Finance and Marketing, areas in which he now lectures and consults professionally.
He is a director of AA Management Training and Consultancy Ltd, School Governor for various schools, and Trustee for various charitable organisations. He is the Chairman of Association British-Nigerian Councillors in the UK and President of Association of Nigerian Academics in UK.
The 2013 GAB Awards recipient was first elected in 2006 to represent Tulse Hill ward. He is a hard working community and ward councillor with additional responsibilities for Lambeth's young people and has done sterling work promoting adoption by Black and Minority Ethnic families.
One of his colleagues describes him as a person involved in community engagement and development, with the key gift of the ability to know when an idea or a cause supersedes politics. He has a willingness - an appetite - to hear all points of view and has a record of success in building relationships across communities and backgrounds.
He likes to relax by watching football. He is more than a football fan - he has had a life time's interest in playing the sport starting by captaining school teams and then playing professional football for the C.R.I.N Football Club in Nigeria. Councillor Adedamola Aminu has put those invaluable skills to even better use in recent years by getting involved in the coaching of children and teenagers in Stockwell, South London.
The event attracted the presence of numerous guests including Ministers Sina Alege and Prince Tajudeen Gbadebo Adeniyi from the Nigeria High Commission; Kate Hoey - a former British Minister of Sport and currently the Member of Parliament for Vauxhall; Cllr Anna Mbachu - former Mayor of Waltham Forest; Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas - former Speaker of Hackney; Opinion leader - Akintokunbo Adejumo and his wife; Princess Deun Adedoyin-Solarin - ace broadcaster and her Intellectual Property Lawyer husband - Ayo Solarin; Mike Abiola - Publisher, African Voice; Ayo Akinfe - Chair of the Nigerian Centenary Awards Organising Committee; Talking Drum maestro - Ayan De First and Olori Grace Alli-Tijani - CEO, Domestic and Sexual Abuse Counselling Services (DASAC); among many others.
