Uhuru Kenyatta
Kenyan police force have arrested Governor Issa Timamy of the coastal Lamu district for alleged connection with three recent massacres in which over 60 people were killed.
The Governor is believed to be connected with the killings which occurred during two consecutive nights in the town of Mpeketoni and a nearby village last week.
Despite an immediate claim of responsibility from the terrorist group Al - Shabab for the Mpeketoni attack, President Uhuru Kenyatta blamed “local political networks” along with an “opportunist network of other criminal gangs”.
And with another attack this week leaving at least five dead, the Kenyan police have arrested Timamy - a member of the opposition CORD party.
“The governor is in custody,” Kenya’s Criminal Investigations Department chief Ndegwa Muhoro said, adding he was due in court today.
“There are various charges lined up against him that are related to the attack,” he said, without giving further details.
The accusations have stoked already tense political rivalry between President Kenyatta and opposition parties.
