The Public Accounts Committee of the Ogun State House of Assembly has assured that the appearance of the various Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) before it was not a witch-hunt, but an integral part of its oversight function.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Abiodun Matthew Akovoyon made this clarification in Abeokuta while conducting checks on the Auditor’s reports on MDAS for 2011 at the Assembly’s Committee Room.
Akovoyon pointed out that this was in line with the nation’s constitution and meant to maintain transparency and promote checks and balances in governance.
He enjoined officials handling account books of government to always update their books and make other relevant documents available to officials from the Auditor General’s office when due in line with the financial rule.
Akovoyon also advised the Internal Auditors in the various MDAs to be more pro-active and continue to promote accountability and transparency, saying some of them always took Auditor General’s queries for granted. He warned that those that were cautioned in the previous year would be sanctioned this year, if they were found to have committed the same offence.
MDAs that have appeared before the Committee include: Ministries of Commerce and Industries, Special Duties, Culture and Tourism, Information and Strategy, Forestry, Environment, State Pension, and Gateway Football Club, amongst others.
