LIVE: Air India plane carrying 242 passengers crashes

An Air India passenger plane bound for London Gatwick from India’s north-western city of Ahmedabad has crashed and exploded within five minutes of takeoff.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane crashed into a medical college hostel in the residential area of Meghani Nagar and burst into flames.

There were 242 people on board the aircraft made up of: 169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, 1 Canadian and 12 crew members.

At press time, there was confirmation of the survival of a British national - Vishwash Kumar Ramesh.
