The man who was fatally shot by London's Metropolitan Police on Shepperton Road in Islington, North London in the early hours of Friday 5 September 2014 has now been named by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), as Dean Joseph.
40-year-old Joseph of Northumberland Park, Haringey, North London was formally identified by family members at the Poplar mortuary last Friday. IPCC family liaison managers assisted with the process.
He was shot twice by a police marksman during a two-hour siege in the basement flat of a house. He was shot once in the left arm, but died after being shot in the back of the left chest.
Police said that he was armed with a knife and they feared that the life of his ex-partner - Julie Moyses, 54, that he was holding hostage, was in immediate danger.
The IPCC is investigating the circumstances surrounding Joseph’s death and investigators have spoken to over 30 witnesses who saw or heard events connected to the fatal shooting.
An inquest into the death is yet to open.
