Kouakou claimed that he had been living in a flat in Grenfell Tower and had been in a relationship with the occupant, who died in the fire.
As a result of his claim, he was accommodated in a hotel for approximately two months before moving into a council-funded flat.
The cost of the hotel accommodation and costs for the flat were just in excess of £30,000.
Detectives established that Kouakou had not lived in the tower. They also confirmed that he had not been in a relationship with the woman.
He was arrested on Thursday, 7 June and subsequently charged.
