A statement by the family through the late President’s Spokesman - Garba Shehu read:
“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHI RAJI’UN.
The family has announced the passing of the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon, in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Buhari was born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State. His life was shaped by public service from the start.
After military training in Nigeria, India, and the United Kingdom, he quickly rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army, becoming Military Head of State following a coup in December 1983. His brief tenure (1983–1985) was known for a stringent anti-corruption campaign, a "War Against Indiscipline," and strict economic policies that divided public opinion.

After his overthrow in 1985, Buhari spent years in relative political obscurity before re-emerging as a symbol of incorruptibility in a fledgling democracy.
After three unsuccessful presidential runs, he won the 2015 general election, defeating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan - a historic democratic transition that won international praise.
Serving two terms as Nigeria’s civilian President (2015–2023), Buhari’s time in office was marked by mixed reviews. Supporters lauded his investments in infrastructure, his drive to fight terrorism in the northeast, and efforts to streamline public finance. Critics pointed to economic stagnation, persistent insecurity in other regions, and concerns about civil liberties.
Throughout his life, Buhari remained a reserved and austere figure, often described as “Spartan” in his lifestyle and “unbending” in his principles. He cultivated an image of personal integrity, earning both respect and criticism for his stoic demeanour and measured public appearances.
He is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and several children.
