Nigerian old students hold sport and fun day
Old students of Nigerian secondary schools in the United Kingdom under the banner of the Nigerian Schools Sports & Family Fun Day (NSSFF) will hold their annual event on Saturday 24 August 2013 at Norman Athletics Park in Bromley, Kent.
Established in April 2012, NSSFF is a collaboration project of UK-based Alumni Associations of Nigerian Schools. Its primary purpose is to establish a global platform for social interaction, through sporting activities, of 'Old Boys and Old Girls' who studied in Nigerian Secondary Schools. It seeks to promote the need to maintain the previous high educational standards of Nigerian Secondary Schools.
According the organisation, it also seeks 'to provide exposure to the younger generation in the Diaspora, of the rich education and legacy enjoyed by the Nigerian Schools Alumni; and to encourage the youths of Nigerian heritage, embrace opportunities to contribute to their host country of residence and motherland in Nigeria.'
The inaugural annual event of NSSFF took place last year and was well attended by approximately 800 (even though 500 were expected) people of different nationalities. Various representatives of Nigerian ‘Old School Students Associations’ participated and competed in the different athletic and family fun events ranging from Relay Race, Tug of War, 100m, 200, Long Jump, amongst others. There were 25 participating Alumni Schools which included Igbobi College, Holy Child, Reagan Memorial Baptist Girls’ Secondary School, Baptist Academy, Birch Freeman, St Gregory’s College, Government College, Ikorodu, Soyuznikis, St Anne’s Ibadan, Methodist Girls’ High School, Christ School Ado-Ekiti, Federal Government College Bida, Aiyetoro Comprehensive High School, and CMS Grammar School.
The event had live music entertainment, exhibitions of variety of businesses including Pension Advisory, Cake-making, and Renewing the African Mindset (RAM). Sponsors included Arik Air, Lebara, Obaseki Solicitors, amongst others.
This year's event aims to provide more fun-filled activities including ‘Catching the Train’ where Nigerian traditional attire would be the outfit for this activity. It surely would be hilarious to watch as people dress up in their various gregarious outfits and carry their suitcases, running to the finishing line within the allocated time! A football match is another activity to watch out for.
A much larger crowd is expected this year as many Nigerians would be on holidays with their families in the United Kingdom.
The organisers stated that 'All Nigerians and ‘Friends of Nigeria’ are very welcome.'
'Interested parties can still place advertisements in the NSSFF Event Brochure 2013 and sponsorships are encouraged from Nigerian-based organisations that wish to attract investments from the Nigerians in Diaspora. Also, there is an opportunity to secure Exhibition Stands on the day. Other schools that wish to participate in this event could do so, particularly those from the South-East and South-South areas of Nigeria.'
The event will be streamed live, thus giving it a global audience. Streaming could also be viewed on various handheld gadgets such as Smartphones, iPads, etc.
