Creative Design & Manufacture (CDM) UK
Social Entrepreneurship
CDM UK is a not for profit social enterprise with the key aim of making a positive contribution in society through its innovative, creative and interactive textile and art focused workshop sessions.
CDM UK is a unique creative facility, using textiles and art as a tool to engage people through interactive workshop sessions to help them deal with their various personal issues, from deprivation to domestic, drug and sexual abuse, depression, isolation, loneliness and self-harm; physical, mental and learning disability and mental, emotional and psychological health needs.
It offers training and support for people to learn how to manufacture high quality, high fashion textile products, using natural fabrics and hand processed textile techniques.
CDM UK promotes healthy eating and living and a healthier lifestyle in all its workshops and activities and encourages people to eat organic, home cooked food, consisting mainly of fruit, vegetable and herbs and less meat, avoiding processed, frozen or ready to eat food that contains harmful, fatty and sugary ingredients. It also encourages people to drink natural water and avoid sugary and sparkling drinks. Through this, CDM UK has seen fantastic outcomes, from significant weight reduction to massive improvement in general health and well-being, improvement in skin condition and overall feeling good in themselves - all by simply changing their diet and lifestyle.
CDM UK also promotes recycling, up cycling and green living in all its workshops and activities and encourages people to live a waste free life using natural products to reduce the dependence on synthetic products that harm the environment. Over the last few years, it has reduced the amount of waste generated from a black bin bag a day to a small shopping bag a week by reducing the use of plastic and using more recyclable products.
So far, CDM UK has helped up to 15 young people to choose a career in textiles, design or art, either through education or employment. It has also helped approximately 10 local textile businesses offering design support, access to govt funding, sampling service and recruitment.
CDM UK is actively engaged with the Manchester Museum Partnership (which includes Manchester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, Whitworth Art Gallery and the Platt Hall) and is a part of the Co Curation Team of the Manchester Museum’s South Asia gallery, which is scheduled to open in 2021.
CDM UK has also developed a fashion brand, known as ‘House of CDM UK’ and have taken part in a number of fashion shows including Manchester Fashion Show. In addition, CDM UK-trained ladies are setting up their own cooperative company, named ‘Stitch’ and have taken part in a fashion show to show case their work at the Festival of Manchester, held in September 2018.
