Professor Rotimi Jaiyesimi graduated from the Ibadan Medical School (University of Ibadan) in 1978. He holds a Masters degree in Business Administration and a Masters degree in Medical Law. One of the first Nigerians to be appointed Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the UK in 1993, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health, the West African College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG).
He is the Associate Medical Director for Patient Safety and Consultant Gynaecologist at Basildon University Hospital, Essex where he played a pivotal role in reducing the hospital’s mortality rate and in moving the hospital from being under ‘Special Measures’ to being rated as a ‘Good Hospital’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). He is a National Trainer for Mortality Review, UK and a Care Quality Commission Adviser. He is Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan where he lectures postgraduate students on aspects of medical jurisprudence and he is the first medical doctor to lecture at the Nigerian Law School, Abuja. He recently completed his tenure as Visiting Professor, University of Sunderland.

Professor Jaiyesimi’s contribution to the NHS has been significant, serving in the NHS since 1989, the General Medical Council (GMC) Fitness to Practice Committee for 13 years and the Health Professions Council Fitness to Practice Panel. He is an examiner for the GMC PLAB examination for licensing doctors to practice in the UK. He is an accredited Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) Medical Educator and has contributed to the work of the National Institute for Health Research.
In 2014, he developed an Electronic Mortality Review tool (MARS) in Basildon Hospital for which he received the Health Service Journal National Award for Innovative Development. He has contributed to the advancement of medicine through his many publications and lectures delivered nationally and internationally.
Professor Jaiyesimi is at the forefront of promoting the reversal of the brain drain. He was Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Medical Excellence and Diasporan Engagement (PRIME and PRIDE) from April 2016 to October 2017. He contributed to the National Policy on Diaspora Matters in 2016 and is currently a member of the Diaspora Professional Healthcare Initiative tasked with facilitating the Brain Gain. He promotes health education to Nigerians through his Facebook platform, Nigerian Health Service, with over 14,000 followers.
Professor Rotimi Jaiyesimi is a transformation agent described by his peers as an asset to the UK National Health Service. The University of Ibadan presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award during its 70th Anniversary celebration in November 2018.
He is married to Morenike, a Chartered Accountant and have three children, Tayo (a Pharmacist), Deji (a Paediatrician) and Oreoluwa (deceased).
