I Stand Corrected is a contemporary story of rage and romance, where two black African lesbian lovers try to touch each other across the supernatural divide. Told through haunting and sometimes absurdly comic physical theatre, with seductive singing, dance, music and fire, I Stand Corrected is an artistic response to the violent epidemic of ‘corrective’ hate rape in South Africa and the virulent anti-gay marriage lobby in Britain.
Co-produced by Mojisola Adebayo and Artscape, in partnership with Ovalhouse, I Stand Corrected is created and performed by Mojisola Adebayo and Mamela Nyamza. It runs from 20 November – 8 December at Ovalhouse.
According to Adebayo, “I Stand Corrected is a powerful protest performance, a gripping and entertaining drama, a moving memorial for the lost, with an uplifting message of love and enduring hope dedicated to the 30+ women who have recently been raped and murdered in South Africa just because of their sexuality, and for everyone who believes in the freedom to love in Britain today.”
In 2009, Mamela and Mojisola were introduced to each other by Jean September from the British Council. They found that they had much in common and that they were both concerned by the issue of homophobia, affecting South Africa and Britain, in different but no less significant ways. Although their creative work is expressed in distinct forms, Mojisola through theatre and Mamela in dance; they wanted to speak through these performance languages and challenge audiences and themselves by raising social issues in unexpected surprising ways.
Mojisola Adebayo is a British born, Nigerian / Danish performer, playwright, director, producer, workshop leader and teacher. Over the past 20 years, she has worked on theatre projects across the world, from Antarctica to Zimbabwe. She has acted in over 40 theatre, television and radio productions, devised and directed over 30 scripts for stage and video and has led countless workshops and training courses. Her wide and diverse work has ranged from being an actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company to co-founding VIDYA, a slum dweller’s theatre company in Ahmedabad, India. Her plays include Moj of the Antarctic: An African Odyssey (Lyric Hammersmith) and Muhammad Ali and Me (Ovalhouse).
Mamela Nyamza is a South African multi-award winning dancer, choreographer, dance teacher, development activist and motivational speaker. She has performed as a dancer in major international musicals such as The Lion King, We Will Rock You and African Footprints. Simultaneously, she has been dedicated in developing choreographies that address issues of human rights and the status of women. Her recent awards include The Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance in 2011 and her most recent work Phantsi Kwempumlo / The Meal has just won The Standard Bank Ovation Award for 2012.
